Tucked away in the beautiful Horton Valley, just outside the township of Bingara in North West NSW, you’ll find Mitiamo, home to the Mack family. Spanning over 8,000 acres, this family-run farm has been in the Mack name since 1885, when the family moved from Berrybank in Victoria. Today, it’s the 4th, 5th and even 6th generations of Macks who live and work on the land, keeping the family’s strong farming legacy alive.
Jason Mack and his family run an Angus Hereford cross herd, with Wagyu genetics introduced for calving ease over first-calf heifers. They run 650 breeders, with progeny finished specifically for the grass-fed market.
But what really sets the Mack family apart is their vision for the future. After experiencing the devastating 2018/19 drought, Jason and his family made a promise to themselves, they’d never see their land left bare again. Since then, they’ve embraced regenerative farming practices, ensuring at least 90% ground cover at all times, planting and protecting trees, and rotating large mobs of cattle to fresh pastures every week.
“The country and wildlife have responded remarkably,” Jason says proudly. “It really shows how resilient our land is when you work with nature, not against it.”
The Mack family also work closely with Landcare, attending courses like the Natural Sequence Farming program run by Stuart Andrews, which has given them even more tools to farm in harmony with the environment.
For Jason, farming isn’t just about running cattle, it’s about producing something truly special.
“We love producing a premium product that has the grass-fed flavour with all its health benefits that customers can enjoy,” he says.
Working with Our Cow has only strengthened that purpose.
“It means our beef goes straight from paddock to plate, with that added personal touch that comes with Our Cow. That’s really important to us.”
Farming is woven into Jason’s life, just as it was for the generations before him. He loves teaching his two boys about farm life, just as his grandfather once taught him.
“I remember being the gate opener on trips to check the stock with Pop,” Jason recalls. “He once showed me a Moreton Bay fig growing out of another box tree, and told me his father had shown it to him when he was a boy, mustering on horseback. Sharing those moments with my own kids now is pretty special.”
For Jason, motivation comes from always striving to improve; learning new ideas, trying new practices, and wanting to pass on a thriving farm to future generations. “We can always do better,” he says. “And knowing we’re leaving the land better than we found it keeps us going.”
And when it’s time to sit down and enjoy a meal with the family? Jason’s favourites are simple but classic: a T-bone steak for the unbeatable flavour of beef.
If you’d love to taste the Mack family’s premium, grass-fed beef for yourself, you can order it straight from their farm to your plate through Our Cow.
