We were driving home from Sydney last week after the huge Australia Day event down at Sydney Harbour. While we were there, the media wanted to ask us a lot of questions about the farm gate price gap and supermarket price gouging.
After answering questions from The Today Show, Sky News, Daily Tele, and more, we couldn’t help but think that MAYBE, just maybe, we’ve had a small piece to play in this unfolding puzzle.
Could it be because of the Our Cow model that other farmers now have the confidence to stand up to the big guys? After realising that we pay our farmers more and our retail prices are very similar?
Not to mention our products are grass-fed, free-range, and wild-caught, so it actually costs more to produce them. They’re better for you and the environment.
I wonder if we, as the Our Cow community, are having a larger impact on the food system than we realize. As our community of farmers and customers continues to grow, the conventional model is being questioned.
I’d like to think that we are changing the food and farming system for the good, and educating consumers about the challenges farmers face every day, especially around pricing.
Farmers have always been price takers, at the mercy of the big guys. We work 365 days a year to produce food for our country. It’s our passion and livelihood; our families depend on it, and the least we can ask for is to be paid a reasonable price.
We genuinely believe the more people that buy from Our Cow, the bigger impact we will have. Not just for our own farmers, but for the greater good of the Australian farming community.
It makes me extremely grateful for all the hard work our team puts into Our Cow, and all of our customers that continue to buy from us each and every day. We know our mission is coming to fruition.
